Depois dos negócios do futebol, das transferências é altura de começar a pensar nas apostas do futebol para a época 2011/2012. E para ajudar a encontra o valor das equipas que vão disputar a liga de futebol nacional lá se voltará a fazer o ELO Liga!

O ELO Liga é um ranking semelhante ao sistema utilizado no Xadrez para classificar cada equipa de acordo com os resultados do futebol obtidos ao longo do tempo.

Para 2011/2012 as duas equipas que subiram de divisão entraram com o valor médio dos rankings da classificação da Naval e do Portimonense e a previsão foi calculada com estes rankings. Agora é só uma questão de aproveitar estes resultados para fazer os seus negócios do futebol, seja através de uma apostinha no totobola ou então num dos múltiplos sites online.

Onyx Boox M91S

Nestes dias tive a oportunidade de brincar um pouco (muito pouco) com um Onyx Boox M91S, um eReader com tecnologia E-Ink Pearl de 9,7″. Posso dizer que o aparelho tem imenso potencial, principalmente pelo maravilhoso ecrã de grandes dimensões, que permite ler PDFs de artigos (mesmo os mais complicados de duas colunas) sem ser preciso andar a converter PDFs para formatos de ereader. O senão que lhe encontrei é mesmo a parte da ergonomia dos controlos. Tudo funciona por touch, ou por um sensor de infra-vermelhos onde se passa o dedo e falta de botões mecânicos dificulta um pouco as operações comuns. Talvez seja uma questão de tempo e habituação, mas neste campo penso que o Kindle DX funcionará melhor.

Anand vs. Gelfand, 2012

Em 2012, se arranjar uma cidade que queira acolher o desafio ao trono do campeão do mundo de Xadrez (provavelmente será Londres). A verdade é que após uma série em que o formato ajudou a existirem 95% de empates é preciso que o próximo campeonato do mundo seja um sucesso.

Entretanto a vitória de Gelfand entre os candidatos a desafiar Anand tem algumas curiosidades:

  • Gelfand é mais velho que Anand! Quando todos falam dos prodígios do Xadrez de tenra idade, são dois quarentões que vão disputar o campeonato to mundo.
  • Em partidas com controlos de tempo normais Gelfand ganhou pela última vez a Anand… em 1993 (há 18 anos)…

Against both players Anand has positive scores and the last time they met, was this year in the 20th Amber Tournament where Anand beat both for a total of (as in chessgames.com):

So with this record, is the best candidate to beat Anand coming out of this candidates format?

Springer crap paperback books are expensive – Rant!

I Love books. I buy lots of books. Just today I received a package with two books that costed me over 150€. Two paperback books. That’s a lot! But this is not a problem. I need them. I love them. I pay the price.

What pissed me off, was that this book, The Geometry of Biological Time, published by Springer, the most expensive of the two, is such a lazy print from Springer. It seems that they just used a Xerox machine and glued 800 pages to make the binding. What a crap work this is, springer? This would be acceptable for a small shop around the corner, but not from you, and not at these prices!

My HTML to eReader process…

I’ve always tried to find the best way to move things from the Web/Computer to my eReader. I have an old eBook reader from BeBook and I always searched for the best workflow to have my stuff always with me in the BeBook. I have been asking for a HTML2ePub plugin or a Save As ePub option  in browsers for sometime, but until that day comes here is how to convert webpages to PDF for the ebook.

My first option was/is Calibre to do conversions. It uses recipes tailored for each website you want to download and converts them to the format you want (ePub, mobi, pdf, etc…). It’s easy, but you need to configure recipes and if the website doesn’t provide an RSS feed you have to code a lot in python.

My most recent approach is a little bit more elaborate, but I think the results are even better. It’s a multiple step process that involves different tools, but gets you wonderful reading experiences in the eBook reader. PDF, yes… I convert everything to PDF. But wait, there’s a trick. Here is how I do it:

1) Install the Readability bookmark/addon for your browser. Readability converts any webpage into a very beautiful and easy to read version.

2) Configure a page format in the printers preferences. Call it “BeBook”. The BeBook screen is 6” (9cm x 12cm) but I found that a page with 14cm x 17cm works best.

3) Print the Readability version of the webpage to a PDF file with this special page size.

4) As this PDF has some white margins (something that is totally nonsense for eBook readers) use Adobe Acrobat Pro to crop all white margins from the PDF file.

The final version reads perfectly in the eReader. The number os words per line is perfect and the font size is also great. The BeBook has two PDF rendering engines: Adobe and XPDF. While the first is more elegant, the second is much faster, but both engines produce great results. If you don’t like the pdf format you can then convert the pdf to epub.
