Where will you type now Buk?

The last typewriter factory closed its doors… no more direct mechanical writing devices…

one thirty-six a.m.

I laugh sometimes when I think about say Céline at a typewriter or Dostoevsky… or Hamsun… ordinary men with feet, ears, eyes, ordinary men with hair on their heads sitting there typing words while having difficulties with life while being puzzled almost to madness.

Dostoevsky gets up he leaves the machine to piss, comes back drinks a glass of milk and thinks about the casino and the roulette wheel.

Céline stops, gets up, walks to the window, looks out, thinks, my last patient died today, I won’t have to make any more visits there. when I saw him last he paid his doctor bill; it’s those who don’t pay their bills, they live on and on. Céline walks back, sits down at the machine is still for a good two minutes then begins to type.

Hamsun stands over his machine thinking, I wonder if they are going to believe all these things I write? he sits down, begins to type. he doesn’t know what a writer’s block is: he’s a prolific son-of-a-bitch damn near as magnificent as the sun. he types away.

and I laugh not out loud but all up and down these walls, these dirty yellow and blue walls my white cat asleep on the table hiding his eyes from the light.

he’s not alone tonight and neither am I.

Duncan Watts promovendo Obvious*

Duncan Watts continua a promoção do seu Everything Is Obvious: Once You Know the Answer.

HTML2ePub – We need a Browser plugin.

There are several ways to convert documents to the ePub format. One of my favorites is the using calibre, that has excellent command line tools than can automate the process.

But on the browser front, there’s nothing that I’m aware of. What I’d like to have was the option to “Save this page as ePub“! Sometimes I just want to save the webpage in a file for latter reader in my eBook reader. Already searched for something like this in Firefox extensions repository, but nothing came up. My ebook reader can read HTML files, but I’d really like them converted to ePub as this would allow cleaning of all junk information.

Also interesting would to use the Readability technology to then produce the epub. Does anyone know anything that can do this?

A liga portuguesa (Zon Sagres) está para lá de meio e a verdade é que no que diz respeito ao topo da Liga Zon Sagres está tudo mais ou menos decidido. Board Games – Why some great games are so underplayed?

I heard my mind discuss the following during this night:

Games are excellent but we now see that today’s kids don’t play board games as much as they play console games.Traditional board games like Risk, Checkers, Chess or Backgammon are somewhat considered difficult and are never taught to or even tried by potential players.Everybody wants to start playing right away and that’s why console shoot’em’up are so popular. You can play even if you suck at it at first, but you don’t really have to invest time in learning how to play it.Well, what makes those old games so different that they need extra time to learn?Obviously there are aspects of those games that one needs to grasp to be able to play.Usually games involve some (or all) of: counting, strategy, combinatorial, tactics, probabilities…This is an indication of what we have here.Although played on the board, these games are mainly a mental joy. It’s something that you solve inside your head. But so does sudoku!?Hm… you’re right! But the sudoku rules are very easy to explain when compared to other games…

So? Am I on to something? What do you think about board games? Are they destined to fade way from our houses in the future? Or are they just destined to be recovered and played by old people that seat on park benches and want to keep their minds sane?

Ventus by Karl Schroeder

Jordan Mason of the planet Ventus comes from a long line of stoneworkers, and he has a clear understanding of his place in his world.via Ventus — KarlSchroeder.com.

Spending most of my time reading scientific / work related stuff there’s no much time to read fiction. One of my 2011 challenges is to read more non-science books and January started with this oldie (by modern standards) Ventus by Karl Schroeder. The good thing about it is that it is free as an e-book that you can download from the author website. If you like sci-fi, fantasy, robots, nanotechnology and a good fight, this might be a good read for you.

On Google self-driving cars

I couldn’t agree more with what Alan Winfield says about this problem: The challenge is not to have an autonomous car, the challenge is to prove the correctness of the system, and of a system that learns during the process. This type of adaptive systems pose several challenges and probably the most challenging one is the public perception of their quality and robustness. We’ve seen some problems recently: The cases of the electronic accelerator of the Prius or the emergency-breaking system of the Volvo C60, both show that these systems are  in their early deployment days. To go from this stage to a future driving experience where our cars are our personal chauffeurs there’s still a long road ahead (pun intended), and probably we wont see these kinds of cars in the next 10 years or so.
